still way over race weight. like qty 1 x weight vest over. treadmill magically fixed itself the day the repair guy was showing up. bike/computrainer working smoothly with the old p3 in singlespeed mode. less working out than during the winter but getting back into it somewhat. exactly zero core strength.

shaved the legs and chest so, you know, game on. not that anybody cares but i don't use the nair any more. i use an electric moustache trimmer and take the guard off, running the clippers right against my skin. not a perfect shave but who needs that on my legs? ends up being pretty fast and tonight the kiddos both helped me.

good little run this morning. even though i know the treadmill at the gym is calibrated so that 8mph is slower than the 8mph on my home treadmill it still gave me some confidence to put down a decent run over a few miles. onward!

forced the workout today. just went hard, to hell with recovery. dane correctly cautions against this but i just couldn't bear another low intensity abandonment due to misery. the adrenaline of intensity overwhelms flu misery. definitely getting over it... just not as quickly as i would have liked to.

is it the gunk in my lungs preventing me from putting up a decent workout? or is it the fact that my "consistency momentum" was broken? certainly a combination of both but i'm always amazed at how special consistency streaks are... so hard to force... so hard to duplicate... so hard to start up again. it's not a motivational gap. i often thought it was that once i put in two weeks i didn't want to lose the investment. but now i have ten in and i really don't want to lose them. but my consistency isn't coming back. i think it's more mental. the expectation... the feel of the long hard workout... you get used to it. it becomes comfortable, easy even. but once you stop you go back to square one. at least i do. maybe i'll feel better next week. in all honesty, i have already put up three 5am workouts this week. at one point that was a worthy accomplishment. it's just that an hour of work is a far cry from the sweet ass workouts i was cranking out just ten days ago. not frustrated (yet.) just pondering the wonder of consistency momentum.

Noticing today that when I work I cram my toes up under my chair, flexing them up towards my shin in the same motion that causes pain right now. I'm more aggressive with this posture particularly when things are overly busy. Guessing that the hellish server issues lately caused me to cram my toes up which led to symptoms post-race.

Stress fracture right foot, near top. Noticed pain after five miler day after race but subconsciously seem to recall some pain before or immediately after race. Not much pain walking/running but when I pull my toes up I feel a sharp pain to the right/top of the foot. With everything happening in my life I haven't yet googled "stress fracture."

Getting worried about my weight. I'm about seven pounds over race target weight. Which is already five pounds over last year's race weight. Most of the current weight is in my stomach/digestive tract and when I move to easier-to-digest foods I'll see a quick 2-4 lbs drop. But that still leaves me needing to drop 3-5 lbs over the next week and a half. I won't push the weight loss too hard. I'll do three lbs. I won't do five lbs. Too close to the race.

So why'd the run hurt today? a) too hard on the bike b) started the run too fast or c) still have fatigued legs from the week. I know my legs are somewhat fatigued but that answer's the one that'll sucker me into a dumb raceday strategy. By the same token, a logical look at the numbers doesn't tell me what was up today. I rode without massive spikes in heart rate/exertion. And I've run 7:18/mi for eight miles off the bike after two hours of hammering it trying to hurt my legs. I think the fatigue's still with me. Which argues for rest tomorrow. Or maybe just swimming and core. My legs shouldn't have been that stiff today.

I don't do well with the 5am workouts. But my busy days don't do well with required afternoon workouts. Just one meetings runs long or some deliverable needs work or some server issue happens or some bug appears and I'm out of the game. I normally do social/phone/email stuff all day and then need the night hours when Heather, Ava and Emme go to sleep to code. So, that leaves me needing to do a 5/6a workout just to relieve some pressure from the day. But, as I've said, my body/mind don't work well in the early am. So, I'm gonna get up and do what I can each morning. Since I'll stay up late the night before I'll be doing it on 4 or 5 hours of sleep. Then I'll catch the other couple hours of sleep in a 5-6p or 6-7p nap. It'll have to be post-business hours but as early as possible. We'll see how this works out. Not sure how naps will fit into things. I suspect that they'll be the first thing to get pushed and I'll end up sleep deprived in a week. Ah, life experimentation.

Week before last was tough for training consistency with the pre-race. Last week was tough with the travel and not having my bike. This week is tough with travel. Next week is tough with travel to NYC. Not exactly easy to fit ironman training into the schedule with travel. The difficulty is with long sessions that require spacing throughout the week. When you're in NYC on Tue/Wed it's impossible to have your Wed long run on Wed. So you push to Mon. Which affects your weekend workout because you need to be recovered. Etc. Etc.

Morning workouts aren't working out. Need to make a concerted effort to switch to afternoon/evening for a while. Problem has to do with sleep... work keeps me up late and then the alarm clock gets me up early. Over the course of weeks this becomes chronic sleep deprivation and my training motivation suffers.

But today the headache is threatening to take me out of my plan. Not really a big deal... it's a filler day. But, I'd like to get something done... maybe a short stationary bike ride.

Two "consistency" workouts so far this week. Low aerobic zone, just getting some action. So I did consistency for a few weeks. Then I switched to some megaworkouts on Wed and weekends for a couple weeks with rest between. Now I'm trying to fill in the holes with consistency workouts. In theory I should have had this all done before moving into the race build proper.

So I have this goal of running 50 miles this week before Fri which includes a long Wed run. Then on Sat Matt, Marc and I are thinking Gaps. But Kindzia posts some good thoughts on how megaworkout must be accompanied by megarest. I don't want to blow myself up but I don't have the base d' consistency that Kindzia has so I'm trying to ramp it all up in 6 weeks. I'll need to balance things and be smart. No signs of overtraining right now... but we all know how this story usually ends.
